Reminders that do not tire: why insistence has a limit

The reminder the user mutes is worse than no reminder

Mobile-platform data is consistent: an app that abuses notifications ends up with its channel silenced. From there, when the alert actually matters, it does not arrive. In medication this is especially serious: a muted notification is not just bad UX, it's a clinical risk.

Three dimensions to calibrate

Frequency

One or two reminders per dose, separated by a reasonable interval, are usually enough. Beyond that, most people ignore the next alert without reading it.

Tone

Health apps are not games. No exaggerated emojis, no motivational language, no gamification. Clear text ("It's time for your Atorvastatin, 20mg") works better than "Let's go! Time to take care of yourself 💪".

Persistence after a miss

If the person did not confirm the dose in the expected window, what does the app do? Three options: insist aggressively (bad), accept silence (worse) or ask once more with different copy and log the event as "pending" (correct). The history keeps the information; it does not delete it.

What not to do

  • Marketing notifications mixed with medication ones. If an app uses the medication notification channel to announce premium features, the user mutes everything.
  • Shocking sounds. Reserve "emergency" alert tones for actual medical emergencies, not for a routine pill.
  • Red number badges. A "3" on the icon adds nothing and adds anxiety.

The principle: persistent, not intrusive
